Get more memory. That could help. Clean your disk cache or defrag...that could help also. [brokentia]
Thanks, I need to defrag, I will try that today. Thanks for replying. [KimMaple]

Have you used a spyware program such as ad-aware? You can do a quick search online and find several such ones. Sometimes all the spyware on your computer can slow it down tremendously. Hope this helps!! [Carzgofast]
I have ad-aware and spybot but haven't ran them in awhile, I will do that today and see if it helps. Thanks for replying. [KimMaple]

Hubby says we have enough ram, not sure how much. Thanks for replying. [KimMaple]

Well if the computer is slow and it is not old defenitly you have viruses. Check for viruses because sometimes not all antiviruses catch all of them. Scan your computer with all antivirus programs that you have. [gnt23tr]
Thanks I will do that. I have AVG free version [KimMaple]

You could try deleting the cookies or temporary files. You do this by going to the Tools, clicking on it then, click on internet options and click on the delete cookies and then click on the delete files. This should help. I do it about every day to keep it cleaned out. Good luck. Hope this helps. [my2catsn1dog]
Thanks, I have done this and it still runs slow, so something else is slowing it down. It takes forever to start up, so how do I make start up faster? [KimMaple]

First, empty your recycle bin. Sometimes we just delete things but they stay there on your PC in the recycle bin using your disk-space Defragment all disk-drives. To do that go to START button, click PROGRAMS, click ACCESSORIES, click SYSTEM TOOLS and click DEFRAGMENTER and defragment the drives. Copy-paste the link below into your browser and download and run the free anti-spyware software. http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/downloads/default.mspx You can also upgrade your PC's memory. I will try these things. Thanks for replying. [KimMaple]

I need to read these responses myself. I have the same problem! [earthmama97]

I had that happen to my computer also, I did get it fixed with support from Dell. First was to remove MSN search bar there was a problem that verision which was causing my system to slow down. Second we ran msconfig and then the start up tab, we disabled all start up items. after a reboot the laptop was 90x better than before I called for support. Third you can check and see what program is eating up all your resources to check this press ctrl+alt+del keys on the computer goto the task manager then processes. this will tell you what processes are running on your system. click on the column and see what process is taking all the CPU time that is the culprit. you can click on end process. this might fix the system might not you system might crash till you reboot and that process is restarted. If it fixes the problem then just use add remove programs if it is that or turn off through msconfig as it is a start up program. [mirage108]
I will try that too. Thanks for replying. [KimMaple]

what is your computer specs? what os do you use? these are the basis for your computer speed. [macubx]
Not sure would have to ask hubby. Thanks for replying. [KimMaple]

Try removing unused programs, remove viruses, defrag your hard drive, delete old files, remove spyware and remove your internet history that can free up memory and hard drive space and add some more RAM that will quicken your system up. [lvlister2006]
I will try that. Thanks for replying. [KimMaple]

Maybe it is very old and i advice you to buy a new one [Flaine]

If you have DSL, turn off pc and the DSL box...wait 20 seconds then turn back on. It fixed mine...oh and delete offline files and clear your history (go to tools and then internet options) Also defrag at least weekly. [robertmc]

formatt it and install anti viruse software. [ashraf7]

either u defrag the drives........if it does n't work, then opt for re-format......... [prabuddha]

i think FORMAT.. is the good idea.. how long has it been since ur last format? and wat kinda things u keep on pc.. it all depends on how fast ur computer can go.. how many disk space ur using. and since u got net, u have to format few times ayear .. because net brings viruses even if u got the besttt virus protection.. If you have too many applications at startup, then definitely it will slow down your computer tremendously. You can see this at the right lower portion of your computer. If you see a lot of icons, then therefore, these contribute to the slowness of your computer. You could also check your task manager to see if there are suspicious applications running in the background by right clicking the deskbar and choose task manager. Now, I will give you some tips on how to make your PC run smoothly and faster. There are a lot of factors why your computer slows down. First, if you have downloaded too many applications which eat a lot of memory; secondly, maybe your PC were already infected with a virus or spyware which may also alter and affect the speed or performance of your computer; thirdly, you do not have enough SD-RAM to run the applications, a lot more. But we can solve this problem without upgrading your operating system, reformatting your computer, or buying a new SD-RAM just for your machine to run smoothly. The secret here is that you have to disable some of the SERVICES that are, actually, not necessary or useful anyway especially if you are just doing some simple things like surfing the net, typing, etc. The first thing that we need to do here is to disable some of the applications than ran at startup. Go to START and click RUN. A box will open, then type "msconfig." System Configuration Utility will pop-up, then click STARTUP. Uncheck or disable all except "ctfmon." Press APPLY. After doing so, go to SERVICES from the System Configuration Utility. As you will see, all services were checked. Some of the services there can be safely disabled. These services also are the most main reason why your computer slows down tremendously even though you have enough memory. Since there are a lot of services that can be disabled, I will just give you the services that should remain ENABLED or CHECKED, so that it would be easy for you to do this. Kindly click this discussion that I had responded recently for complete details - www.mylot.com/w/discussions/961767.aspx Please read and follow the instructions carefully. Hope this would help. Have a great day! [braveheart07]
