my grandpa sent my dad a large some amount for christmas and my parents are thinking of buying me a new computer they want to know what kind i want...it cant be too expensive...any suggestions????? i want a desktop but dont know what processor to get..

My Dell 4600 has served me well for almost four years. No problems at all. I paid just over a grand and got all the upgrades and all the bells and whistles too with a printer/scanner/fax included. I'm excited for you Annie... [vikingswest]

The computers nowadays are so fast and personally if you buy a computer, it will be good enough. As long it's in the 'gig" range. I think you'll be ok. Have fun with your new computer! [acosjo]

I can tell you what you shouldn't get... A Gateway computer (they suck). My first computer was a Gateway, it gave me so much aggravation! I was forced to learn a lot about computers and then get very creative in order to get it to do the things it was supposed to do! After five years of glitches and malfunctions, this past September it stopped working all together (this is after I spent hundreds of dollars on upgrades and it still never did what it was supposed to!) I couldn't get it to turn on! And then smoke started coming out of it! So I needed a new computer. I got one at Best Buy, a Compaq Presario, it came with speakers, monitor, printer, cdrw/ & dvd drive, and it works great. The whole thing was less than 400 dollars. So fart I have no complaints, and now I am able to plug my camcorder into it and watch home videos on my PC and also send them to people. So my suggestion is to shop around, different stores have some amazing sales and you should be able to get a whole package system that meets you needs for a very reasonable price. You can buy desk top computer tower casting. HP, Dell, IBM or Compaq. 17" LCD flat display. Processor speed 2.6GB or 4.2GB. RAM 512MB. Not too costly but will ease to use. [edigital]

Most processors now are either intel pentium 4,intel pentium d or intel duo core.The fastest currently should be intel duo core but there isn't really much difference between the speed of these 3 processors.They are all modern processors.Intel Pentium 4 will do the job easily.Even for playing games.Although i recommend AMD for playing games though.Get the pentium 4 it's the cheapest currently and it's alot more than what you will need. yeah but AMD draws a lot of juice and is hard on the power supply.Plus if you don't have the "Quiet cool" technology,they are very noisy and need an extra fan to keep them running good,so another juice-drawing device....My suggestion Annie is go to Future Shop...And get a Compaq with a good Intel p4.... well the loading of pages has a lot to do with your internet connection speed....even if you have the fastest cpu on earth,if you navigate at 56k....not gonna load any faster.. [MaxPower1971]
I think you don't need a dual core cpu or anything too fancy...a good intel P4 with enough ram(512 minimum)...Your sound and video cards can be reused in the new pc so it'll save you a bit of money.Your sound card is just missing the drivers...if you want...you can pm me and I will try to find your drivers and help you re-install it again in the meantime. Annie whatever you do, whichever component you compromise on please dont do so with RAM. It is the most needed thing. Buy an Ok motherboard. A Dual core or AMD should do just fine for you. [anksrivastava]
