Hey guys and girls! Im really excited about the holidays and Im really bothered about the best christmas present to give. One of my cousin is taking up Computer Science. Would it be better to give her a Laptop or Desktop computer? Im really confused and hope you can help me out.
Personally I own both. I use a laptop for mobility and beacuse im always on the go. Its not a high-end laptop with all the bell and the whistles. Its just a laptop that gets my daily job done. I also own a desktop computer, purely for entertainment. For playing games, watching DVDs, video editing and graphics designing.
So what should i give her this christmas? I really want to make it a surprise, but my budget doesnt allow me to give her both. Any opinions and recommendations would be highly appreciated! Thank you and have a great day! :)

i like the desk top but have a laptop for when i travel and work. [sarah22]
Thanks for the reply pal. I had already decided for a laptop, and I gave it out as a Christmas present to her. Was she ever happy! Thanks for the suggestion though. [ryanrudolf]
I have used both Desktop computer as well as a Notebook Computer or Laptop, and I am up to a conclusion that if we keep the mobility feature apart, then Desktop Computers are much better than Laptops. The only better feature of Laptops is its mobility. [amitksing]
Thanks for the suggestion pal. I already made up my mind and opted for a laptop. She was really happy and so am I. :) [ryanrudolf]
It is probaly best to give a laptop so she can take it around with her. But she can lose it too. If I had a choice, I would prefer a laptop. As long as it has Internet connection anywhere I go. [reaperz]
I agree with you buddy. I gae her a laptop and she was really happy. Oh, the joys of giving! :) [ryanrudolf]
I prefer laptop my friend it should be cool! [kups4pal]
I agree with you my friend! I settled for a laptop and she was real happy. Thanks for the suggestion. :) [ryanrudolf]
i'd say laptop provided you'll choose the lighter ones :) i can take it with me if i want to, watch dvd in it, download and listen to mp3s, etc :) [kitakitts]
Yes, I agree with that. I opted for a laptop and she was really happy with her Christmas present! I too was also happy to see that she really appreciates what I have given her. Oh the joys of giving! :) [ryanrudolf]
I think a laptop is more suitable for a gift .If I wanted to choose one I would go with a model that accepts upgrades (to the hard disk size ,to the RAM and graphics processor ) none of those with built-in accessories . I have a Toshiba satellite ,it's excellent for all purposes except gaming because of the built-in damn stock graphics chip . It has 80 gb HD , centrino duo processor ,DVD read/write and 1 gb of RAM .There is a larger series from Toshiba that has better graphics specs so maybe you would like to get that one . They might be expensive ,though .I always thought Compaq made the best laptops ,maybe because the first laptops I saw were Compaqs .Acer laptops are cheaper ,I guess .Also theres the Korean brands like Samsung , they are less costly and very efficient . [shogunly]
Thanks for the feedback buddy, and I have to agree with your recommendation. I already bought a laptop and gave it to her as a Christmas gist. Was she ever happy and excited! :) [ryanrudolf]
I have both, but prefer the desk top for everyday. It's set up at my desk handy with all my documentation and paperwork. I like the laptop when I'm going away somewhere cause Lord knows I wouldn't want to be without a computer for the weekend - LOL. I find it harder to type and I make more mistakes because the keyboard is so different and I'm not use to it. [wahmbuddy]
Thanks for the feedback buddy. I guess some people are not accustomed to using a laptop. But I already bought one last Christmas and gave it to her as a present. She was really happy and excited. I think I made the right decision. :) [ryanrudolf]
well laptop of course because Sometimes size really does matter. However, in the case of a laptop, it's generally the smaller size that people find attractive... You may simply not have enough room for a full-blown desktop system. This is especially true for college students who are crammed into tiny dormitory rooms, and urban dwellers who are crammed into equally tiny apartments. Even if you buy a laptop and never take it anywhere, that might be all the desk real estate you can spare. Note: College students should be aware that most colleges and universities recommend laptops for their incoming students for the reasons noted above. [imranali527]
Better to give her a laptop. She's often on the road hence mobility of the stuff is appropriate. Should you be able to give her both... its up to you. That would mean she would have lots of options...lol [hmike_d]
i think i depends on what you want to give on your cousin, think the most reseanoble gifts, if you think computer is good because your cousin is taking computer science course, think of the disturbance he can get if you give him a personal computer, he can do anything aside studying... [annettenasser]
Actually, i think it all depends on your cousin's usage. Is he/she still studying? allow he/she to play game? or he/she is working? If for small kids, i suggest better buy a Desktop , because desktop can be upgrade easier and its cheaper for student. If its for adult, i think buy a labtop for hi/her is more suitable because can bring along while travelling. But anyhow, why dont ask which computer (desktop or labtop) he/she like most?? :) [tim_un]
laptop. obivously yar, i m using also laptop, and who ru plz tell nme,,becauses who is dancing like in mini sckurt. [naimish]
i am using desktop pc .I dont have any problem with that that works great fo me i like my will spent more time using my pc i didnt have any plans going for laptop [vPrathap]
DESKTOP is the best. There are lots of things you can do with it. not like the laptop, the parts and accessories are to expensive, its just fit for the office work. GO for the DESKTOP to enjoy more time to play and upgrade........ [JuniX25]
I hope this is helping. Should I buy a laptop or desktop? Choosing between a laptop and desktop can be a difficult decision. The bottom line comes down to portability. If you will need or use the portability of a laptop, then it can be a powerful tool for you and worth the extra money. However, if the laptop will simply act as a desktop with very occasional need for portability, a desktop is also an excellent choice and far less expensive. Which should I buy? Laptop or Desktop? Laptops have a great advantage in terms of their portability. If you carry a laptop with you, your applications and documents are always immediately available. With a wireless card, your laptop can also access the Internet while on the go, so you have more places to do research, check your email, and be more productive. Desktops do offer advantages over laptops as well. Although laptop prices have come down while performance has increased each year most desktops offer a better price-to-performance ratio. Desktops also still hold some ergonomic advantages over laptops but bear in mind that they will also take up considerably more space. Your decision should be based primarily on how you plan to use your computer, and then, how much your computing budget can handle. Here are some factors to consider: Weight, size and portability A typical laptop with integrated screen, keyboard and disk drive, weighs between 4.5 and 9 pounds (the "ultralight" models weigh in at about 2.5 to 3 pounds). Typically the "ultralight" models do not have a modular bay for devices like an internal optical (CD) drive. Your classic desktop computer, with its standalone CPU, monitor, and keyboard, weighs in at about 70 pounds. If you regularly want access to the contents of your computer whether at home, office or on the road, the portability of a laptop is an important criterion. Laptops also have a smaller footprint than desktop computers, although LCDs, or flat panel displays, have reduced the footprint of desktop computers in recent years. Ergonomics One downside of portability is ergonomics. The laptop's miniature size can make its use less comfortable and physically taxing. The desktop computer's design has evolved to ease the comfort of users. Its display is at eye level, and the keyboard allows for proper positioning of your back, arms, and wrists. These are important concerns, especially when you use your computer for prolonged periods of time. But you can improve laptop ergonomics by building a more comfortable "home base" into which you can dock your laptop when you return to your desk. A home base can include such things as a standard keyboard, a mouse, an external display, network and printer connections, etc. Cost and reliability PC desktops are approximately 1/2 to 2/3 the price of a comparable laptop. Although the overall prices have declined, price gaps still exists, largely because of the higher cost of laptop displays and the added cost of miniaturized technology. Since laptops are portable, they are more prone to accidents and abuse than desktops. And due to their size, laptops require smaller, more intricate components and more tedious labor resulting in more costly upgrades and repairs. We do, however, recommend that you consider purchasing extended warranties for both laptops and desktops to cover the effective life of the machine. Connectivity Both laptops and desktops have equal connectivity to the Internet through the standard technologies including dial-up modems, DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) or Cable modems, Ethernet and wireless networking. But because of their mobility, only laptops can take full advantage of wireless technologies. Theft A laptop's small size and portability make it more vulnerable to theft. Unless you can lock or secure your laptop, you should take it with you wherever you go. Various security devices and carrying cases are available for laptops to deter thieves. In summary - Desktops provide less expensive, more comfortable, powerful performance to meet your local and Internet access needs from a fixed location. Laptops provide powerful performance to meet your local and Internet access needs from virtually anywhere at any time. This will cost you roughly one-third more, and for additional comfort you will pay more yet for extra "home base" components. But if you want to take advantage of the portability and increased productivity offered by laptops, then the extra expense may be well worth it. If portability and the extended access it provides is not important, then a desktop may make more sense. The choice is yours. Evaluate and review your computing needs. Then proceed to choose what's best for you. [badrun]
